We know that the fain-life on Yolen withstood even Adonalsium, pre-shattering. We know that the fain-life had killed gods (Hoid referred to Yolen as a place where gods died) and had killed most of the population, life and land. The Cosmere DOES have a coherent history for how humans and animals got to the various places where they are. However, revealing all that history here would of course be a big spoiler. Brandon Sanderson uses the history of his worlds as part of the story along with the present - we can't just give you "the backstory of everything that happened ...
